Extended School Year (ESY)

Extended school year services are special education and related services, which are provided by the School District to an IDEA eligible child with a disability beyond the School District’s regular school year in accordance with the child’s IEP at no cost to the child’s parent and meet the standards of ISBE.

Extended school year services shall be provided to each child whose unique needs require special education and related services in excess of the regular school year. Children in special education who may require extended school year services are those whose IEPs specify an extended school year program and or related services as determined by the child’s IEP team in accordance with the IDEA and ISBE standards and regulations.

Extended School Year (ESY): All children "regress” to some extent between school years. It must be determined whether a child's regression would likely be substantial, and whether the child would require a greater than usual amount of time to "recoup,” or to review and/or relearn previously attained objectives.

In addition to significant regression and/or limited recoupment, the following are also taken into consideration:

  • The degree of the child’s impairment

  • The parent’s ability to provide structure at home

  • The child’s rate of progress

  • The child’s specific behavior and/or physical problems

  • The availability of alternative resources

  • The child’s ability to interact with non-disabled children

  • The specific curricular areas for which the child needs continuing attention

  • The vocational and transition needs of the child

  • The child’s history of regression

In most cases, determinations about ESY services are based on more than one factor. For some children, however, it may be appropriate to make the determination of whether the child is eligible for ESY services based only on one criterion or factor.
