Basic Financial Information.

Illinois public schools' fiscal year runs from July 1st through June 30th. This means that FY 20 includes information from July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020. FY21 starts July 1, 2020 and ends on June 30, 2021. Each fiscal year is named for the year it ends.

As districts in Illinois function on a 'Cash Basis' accounting system, any transactions (revenue or expenditure) occurring during these dates account for transactions for that fiscal year. Late payments of revenues could increase the revenues for the following year. This is also true for expenditures, so timing and coordination are essential to ensure the budget accounts for expectations.
